During the month of January, I was able to sneak away for a true winter fly-fishing experience on the Yakima River alongside an Ellensburg-based guide service. Winter fishing in Central Washington always comes with a bit of strategy, so the day started early to get over the pass before weather conditions could turn unpredictable.
After arriving with some time to spare, we pulled off along the river, fired up breakfast, and soaked in the quiet that only a winter morning on the Yakima River can offer. There’s something special about slowing things down, warming up by the river, and knowing you’re about to fish one of the Pacific Northwest’s most iconic and only Blue Ribbon trout fisheries.
The Setup & Conditions
For the day, I was fishing a Prolite Titanium 9'0" 5-weight fly rod, a perfect match for winter nymphing and precise presentations. The setups were intentionally simple—an indicator with a double-nymph rig, occasionally adding in a San Juan worm from time to time. With cold water temperatures, the fish weren’t overly aggressive, so clean drifts and patience were key.
Early Success & Steady Action
Despite the slower winter bite, things came together quickly. In the first pool of the day, the group found success and brought a solid rainbow trout to hand—a great sign that the plan was working. As the day went on, the Yakima River continued to deliver, producing steady action and reminding us why it’s such a dependable winter fishery.

Looking Ahead
Winter fly fishing can be demanding, but days like this make it more than worth the effort. Cold air, snow-dusted banks, and chrome-bright rainbows are what January on the Yakima is all about. We’re already looking forward to warmer weather, higher fish activity, and another trip back to this legendary river.
If you’re gearing up for winter or early-season fly fishing, a well-balanced rod and a simple, confidence-building setup can make all the difference—just like it did on this trip.
