Halibut and deep-drop fishing is a test of lifting power. You're dropping heavy lead to the bottom in deep water and cranking big, strong fish up off the structure — often against current. A halibut rod is built short and stout for exactly that: an extra-heavy backbone that moves weight and fish, the leverage to work a fish at the rail, and wraps and components that hold up to heavy load and saltwater.
Every rod in this collection is a finished build, handmade in Olympia, WA and ready to ship — no build wait. We build halibut and deep-drop rods for heavy bottom water, and the lineup changes as we build and sell, so it's worth checking back. If you want a specific length, power, or wrap that isn't on the rack, we'll build it to order.

What makes a halibut rod different?
Halibut and deep-drop rods are built around lifting power. Dropping heavy lead deep and pulling big fish off the bottom calls for an extra-heavy backbone and a short length that gives you leverage at the rail. Many are spiral-wrapped so the guides track straight and the blank doesn't twist under heavy load. It's a purpose-built tool — a salmon trolling or casting rod simply won't move the weight.
-
How do I pick the right halibut rod?
Match the rod to your depth and the lead you drop. Deeper water and heavier weights call for more backbone; a shorter rod gives you more lifting leverage. Consider whether you want a spiral wrap for heavy braid. Because everything here is pre-built, the lengths and powers on offer change as we build and sell — so browse what's available now and pick what fits your water. Not sure? Talk to a builder and we'll point you to the right rod, or build one to your spec.

What is deep-drop fishing?
Deep drop means fishing heavy weight on the bottom in deep water — for halibut and other bottom fish. It demands a rod that can carry a heavy lead down, hold the bottom, and lift a strong fish back up without wearing you out. These rods are built for that load, with the backbone and leverage to do the heavy work.

Are these rods ready to ship?
Yes. Every rod on this page is a finished, handbuilt rod, ready to ship — most orders go out within the week. These are catalog builds, so the exact lineup (lengths, powers, and finishes) changes as we build and sell; what you see here is what's available right now. Want a spec we don't have in stock? Start a custom build and we'll make it to order.

Can you build a custom halibut rod?
Yes. If you want a specific length, power, wrap, or component package, start a custom build or talk to a builder and we'll spec it with you. Everything on this page is finished and ready to ship now — custom builds are a separate, made-to-order path.
