Downrigger rods are built for one job: fishing a downrigger. The rod loads against the cannonball and holds a deep, steady bend while you troll, then snaps back to set the hook the instant the line pops free of the release clip. Get that wrong and you pull hooks; get it right and the rod does the work for you.
Every rod in this collection is a finished build, handmade in Olympia, WA and ready to ship — no build wait. We build downrigger and trolling rods for Pacific salmon and Northwest kings, Great Lakes salmon and lake trout, albacore, and the rest of the salmon-trolling crowd, and the lineup changes as we build and sell, so it's worth checking back. If you want a specific length, action, or handle layout that isn't on the rack, we'll build it to order.

What makes a downrigger rod different?
A downrigger rod is built to fish behind a downrigger. As you troll, the rod loads against the weight on the cannonball and holds a deep, steady bow; when a fish hits and the line releases from the clip, the blank has to snap back fast enough to pick up the slack and drive the hook home. That calls for a specific blend — a deep, parabolic bend with quick recovery — that a general casting or spinning rod doesn't have. A good downrigger rod also rides comfortably in a rod holder all day and keeps enough backbone to turn salmon in current.
-
How do I pick the right downrigger rod?
Match the rod to your water and your target. Heavier builds handle big kings, deep cannonballs, and current; lighter, softer ones suit smaller salmon, lighter line, and a more forgiving bite. Length changes how the rod clears the boat and steers fish around the gear. Because everything here is pre-built, the exact lengths and actions on the rack change as we build and sell — so browse what's available now and pick the one that fits how you fish. Not sure? Talk to a builder and we'll point you to the right rod, or build one to your spec.

Downrigger rod vs trolling rod vs mooching rod — what's the difference?
Downrigger rods load against a downrigger ball and release on the strike — parabolic action with fast recovery. Trolling rods overlap for many salmon applications but cover flat-line and side-planer setups where the rod isn't loaded against a ball. Mooching rods are longer and softer, built to fish cut or live bait at depth on a mooching reel. If you fish a downrigger, start here; if you fish bait at depth without one, see the mooching collection.

Are these rods ready to ship?
Yes. Every rod on this page is a finished, handbuilt rod, ready to ship — most orders go out within the week. These are catalog builds, so the exact lineup (lengths, actions, and finishes) changes as we build and sell; what you see here is what's available right now. Want a spec we don't have in stock? Start a custom build and we'll make it to order.

Can you build a custom downrigger rod?
Yes. If you want a specific length, action, handle layout, or component package, start a custom build or talk to a builder and we'll spec it with you. Everything on this page is finished and ready to ship now — custom builds are a separate, made-to-order path.
