A Galaxy-Inspired Centerpin Build with Meaning Beyond the Rod
Some rods are built for performance. Some are built for aesthetics. This one was built to carry a story, a memory, and a connection far deeper than what meets the eye.
When Orville reached out through our Custom Fishing Rod Builder, he wasn’t just looking for a 12’0” centerpin rod for salmon and steelhead—he wanted a build designed specifically around his Custom Danny Colville centerpin reel. The reel itself featured an incredible galaxy-themed finish, and from that moment on, the direction of the entire project was clear.

Building the Foundation
At the core of this build is a Stryker Rods SCP1204-2 float blank, chosen for its balance, sensitivity, and control when targeting salmon and steelhead with a centerpin setup. From there, every component was selected to complement both the performance of the rod and the galaxy theme that would define it visually.
The build features an ALPS aluminum butt cap (AF2), custom airbrushed with a galaxy design to match the reel. A 14” CFX spinning rear grip flows seamlessly into an ALPS aluminum reel seat, with the insert also airbrushed to continue the theme. For the foregrip, Orville requested a CFX full wells fly-style grip, finished with a purple aluminum winding check to add a subtle pop of color.

To further enhance the overall aesthetic, we incorporated an Adams Precision Archery galaxy arrow wrap, which tied the theme together and added depth without overpowering the design.
Wrapping, Guides, and Finish Work
For the thread work, we started with a clean black base wrap, adding metallic inlays that echoed the movement and color shifts of a galaxy. These details were kept intentional and restrained, allowing the rod to catch the light without feeling busy or overdone.
The guide train consists of ALPS titanium spinning guides, keeping the rod lightweight, responsive, and durable for long days on the water.
This build also marked an exciting step forward for us as a shop. The airbrushing process—something we’ve recently begun offering—required dialing in color blends, layering, and pattern control. The end result was a finish that exceeded expectations and opened the door for even more creative custom options moving forward.
A Rod with Personal Meaning
During the coating process, Orville asked if we could incorporate something deeply personal into the rod—his father’s ashes. We worked closely with him to ensure this was done respectfully and intentionally. Just beside the rod label, we created a dedicated section where the ashes were mixed directly into the epoxy, forming a permanent tribute.
In that same area, we added a small memorial inscription to honor his father, making this rod more than just a fishing tool—it became something that carries meaning every time it’s on the water.
With epoxy remaining that contained his father’s ashes, we knew simply discarding it was not an option. Instead, we used the remaining material to create a small commemorative coin for Orville—something he could keep, display, or use in any way he felt was right. It was a simple gesture, but an important one, ensuring that every part of the process was handled with care and respect.
For the remainder of the rod, we blended galaxy-colored glitter into the finish. The key was restraint—only a subtle hint of sparkle, enough to catch the light without being overwhelming. The color choice and balance ended up being the final touch that brought the entire build together.
More Than a Custom Rod
This project challenged us in the best ways possible. It pushed us to try new techniques, expand our creative capabilities, and approach rod building with an even greater level of intention. More importantly, it reminded us why we do what we do.
Custom rods aren’t just about performance—they’re about stories, memories, and moments on the water. This galaxy-themed centerpin rod for Orville represents exactly that, and it’s builds like this that continue to push Prolite Rod Technology forward.
